Most houses are made with mudbrick and with a smooth outer coating, sometimes plastered or otherwise decorated (this one has fairly minimal decorative painting). The climate is dry overall and mudbrick is the most economical and resistant building material available (though it does require more maintenance than in outright arid climates due to regular and sometimes very heavy winter rains), with the use of wood generally being reserved for maintaining the structural integrity of the roof and portals. These houses are fairly effective at insulation, and a well-constructed home will not have dramatic temperature gradients between hot days and cool nights.

Some homes lack doors altogether and use fabric or straw drapes; actual doors are hung by pintles and made with wood and/or woven reeds. Domestic chimneys have not been invented anywhere in general, and smoke in a small house like this will be removed (not the most efficiently) through small tubes in the walls and via the door/windows. Cooking hearths in these smaller houses are usually placed in the center of the building, which goes a little ways to allowing smoke to disperse.

Flat mudbrick roofs are in use in some places, though pointed thatched roofs like these are more common in all but the driest areas due to better shedding rainfall/occasional snow accumulation. Thatching is made with straw or papyrus, location depending, and can become very thick as a byproduct of routine maintenance on old houses.

Living in the Apple Ecosystem

For years, Apple has been synonymous with innovation, sleek design, and a user experience that’s second to none. As someone who’s grown to appreciate tech that not only works but works effortlessly, I’ve found myself deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem. It wasn’t planned—it just happened, bit by polished aluminium bit.  

Let’s take a stroll through my collection. It all starts with my iPhone 16 Pro, a marvel of modern engineering. The titanium finish feels premium, the 1TB storage means I’ll never run out of space, and the Dynamic Island feature? A game-changer for multitasking. It’s my pocket-sized powerhouse that I can’t imagine life without.  

Then there’s the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the ultimate companion. It tracks my fitness, keeps me connected, and even has a battery life that can survive my busiest days. The black titanium design adds a touch of rugged elegance, making it my constant wrist buddy.  

On the audio front, my AirPods Max have transformed how I consume media. Whether it’s blocking out distractions with Active Noise Cancellation or indulging in Spatial Audio for a truly immersive experience, they’re indispensable for productivity and relaxation alike.  

For heavy-duty tasks, my MacBook Pro steps in. It’s not just a laptop; it’s my creative workstation, my writing hub, and my multitasking beast. Paired with the iPad Pro, which serves as my digital sketchpad, second screen, and mobile productivity tool, these two are the perfect duo for any endeavor. The seamless continuity between them—thanks to features like Universal Control and AirDrop—is a testament to Apple’s genius.  

The best part of this ecosystem is how effortlessly everything connects. Need to transfer files? AirDrop. Want to copy something on one device and paste it on another? Universal Clipboard has my back. Notifications and calls? They appear on every device, so I’m always in the loop. It’s a tech symphony, and I’m the delighted conductor.  

Now that I think about it, there’s just one thing missing to complete the set: the HomePod mini. Once Siri gets a much-needed update to make her smarter and more intuitive,(Yes I am looking at you Apple Intelligence)  I’ll likely make the leap.

After all, a smart home deserves a smart speaker, and nothing fits the bill better than an Apple product. Until then, I’ll continue enjoying my Apple wonderland—one seamless experience at a time.

Kai-Fu Lee has declared war on Nvidia and the entire US AI ecosystem.

🔹 Lee emphasizes the need to focus on reducing the cost of inference, which is crucial for making AI applications more accessible to businesses. He highlights that the current pricing model for services like GPT-4 — $4.40 per million tokens — is prohibitively expensive compared to traditional search queries. This high cost hampers the widespread adoption of AI applications in business, necessitating a shift in how AI models are developed and priced. By lowering inference costs, companies can enhance the practicality and demand for AI solutions.

🔹 Another critical direction Lee advocates is the transition from universal models to “expert models,” which are tailored to specific industries using targeted data. He argues that businesses do not benefit from generic models trained on vast amounts of unlabeled data, as these often lack the precision needed for specific applications. Instead, creating specialized neural networks that cater to particular sectors can deliver comparable intelligence with reduced computational demands. This expert model approach aligns with Lee’s vision of a more efficient and cost-effective AI ecosystem.

🔹 Lee’s startup, 01. ai, is already implementing these concepts successfully. Its Yi-Lightning model has achieved impressive performance, ranking sixth globally while being extremely cost-effective at just $0.14 per million tokens. This model was trained with far fewer resources than competitors, illustrating that high costs and extensive data are not always necessary for effective AI training. Additionally, Lee points out that China’s engineering expertise and lower costs can enhance data collection and processing, positioning the country to not just catch up to the U.S. in AI but potentially surpass it in the near future. He envisions a future where AI becomes integral to business operations, fundamentally changing how industries function and reducing the reliance on traditional devices like smartphones.

The thing about Campoestela is that there are about four thousand spacefaring species known (because fuck settings with half a dozen or none aliens). Each of those comes from a civilization with at least as many *nations* and cultures as Earth (I'm using humans here as the baseline for matters of comparison). They also are extremely diverse in biology and way of thinking, though they are able to communicate with each other, there is a deep need for a whole diplomatic system of people who can understand other people. Not only that, but multi-species communities and nations are common. The cultural diversity is staggering. There are humans that have been raised far away from human civilization and act completely "alien" to someone raised in human majority worlds, and viceversa.
